Our Experience
Small-scale/on-farm anaerobic digestion plants
Client:
Defra
Project:
LRS Consultancy (LRS), in association with SLR Consulting (SLR), was commissioned in 2009/10 by Defra to examine the use, development and performance of small-scale/on-farm anaerobic digestion (AD) plants (150 - 400kW) in Europe.
Solution:
The support provide comprised desk based research and site visits in a number of European countries, and included:
- Identification of a representative sample of relevant plants in Europe that deal with wastes or a combinations of wastes specified by Defra
- Collection of process specific data for each of the plants identified, such as applied AD system and process performance in relation to the feedstock, but also identification of digestate end-uses, operational issues and received subsidies
- Data analysis on the data to evaluate the relationship between the quantity of feedstock and the amount of biogas/energy produced and how these are influenced by feedstock changes or technology choice
- Compilation and data analysis on emissions from on-farm and small-scale AD sites and to provide information with respect to waste management licensing exemptions for small-scale / on-farm AD in the visited countries.
Outcome:
The work provided Defra with a better understanding on the linkages between government subsidies, market dynamics and approach to competition and risk at a European wide scale that will be able to assist the government in its current plans to promote the development of AD in the UK.
