Ban the 'w...' word, we should be talking about resources
30th September 2011
LRS hosted the second in the very successful series of Network Meetings yesterday. The meeting, which was attended by over 70 key decision makers from across a range of industry sectors, focused on the question of whether changes in resource management would be led by policy or by economic and commercial drivers associated with resource scarcity.
The speakers included: Brian Haley, who examined the impact of the waste review; LRS's Graham Randles who evaluated the commercial impacts of resource scarcity on procurement behaviours; Peter Jones who invited the delegates to 'think outside the box' about investment and infrastructure to facilitate better resource management approaches; Liz Goodwin who talked about the success WRAP is having with their voluntary codes for retailers and the C&D sector; Duncan Jones from Hertfordshire Waste Partnership who told the audience how partnerships of local authorities can generate positive income from materials collections; and Ian Yolles from Recyclebank who reminded everyone of the importance of the consumer in driving real change.
The panel debate, chaired by LRS's chairman Derek Stephenson who is an expert in producer responsibility, provoked a lively and at times controversial discussion between the speakers and the delegates. Derek's experience includes working with some of the leading global brands, retailers and pack/fillers on their strategies and implementation plans and he was able to bring some very interesting perspectives to the debate. One delegate remarked 'I thought the presentations and debate were excellent, and all the participants seemed to make the most of the chance to share their experience in a discussion that was both intellectually stimulating and at the same time grounded in some real and practical examples'.
Copies of the presentations are avaiable on the LRS website 'info centre'. To be added to the invite list for the February 2012 event please email debbie.hitchen@lrsconsultancy.com.
The event was recorded by Edie.Waste, LRS's media partner, and extracts of the speakers' presentations will be published on-line over the coming weeks.
LRS Managing Director, Dee Moloney, said 'I really enjoyed the presentations, discussions and the networking at yesterday's event. It wouldn't be possible without the support of our speakers and our sponsors, and I'm grateful to them for making it such a successful afternoon.'
